The island, which is actually dedicated to the soul of a little girl who mysteriously died by drowning in a nearby canal, once belonged to a reclusive old man Julian Santana Barrera. He claimed that the ghost of the little girl had started haunting him and that he could hear her tormented screams at night. He therefore started collecting dolls and hanging them from the tress to appease the anguished spirit of the child.
This, however, soon turned into a madness and after half a century later, Julian had collected more than 1500 of these creepy dolls, where the oldest one is still very much there, hanging by the entrance.
He lived by himself in the woods and was found mysteriously dead in 2001 in the same canal as the girl.
His cousin Antonio now lives on the island, running it as a major tourist attraction of Mexico. The local people around and even visitors often claim they can hear the dolls whispering to them. People who also visit the place leave dolls of their own too.
Photographer Cindy Vasko, who had recently visited the island, described it as the ‘creepiest place she has ever visited.’ All these photos are from her recent trip!
