We have always loved leading Bollywood actress in romantic and mushy roles look absolutely stunning in exotic locations of the world. However, there are times when the script and story demand some main-stream actresses to pull off grey and negative shades too. While men as Bollywood villains have always convinced us, actresses have never stayed behind either. Another actress to join the clan is none other than newbie Shraddha Kapoor. After ABCD2, Shraddha has given a silent nod to the fact that she’ll be playing a negative role in her next film. We still aren’t sure whether it will be ‘Baaghi’ or ‘Rock On 2’ but Shraddha recently stated in media that “”I’ll just say that may be you’ll see me in that (a grey persona) sooner rather than later.”
Shraddha will not be the first one who has chose to experiment but Bollywood heroines have always been open to such diverse roles. Here are 9 such actresses who definitely deserve an applause for carrying off negative characters with utmost ease and finesse.
1. Kareena Kapoor as Neha Verma in Fida (2004)
Ken Ghosh’s Fida starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan was definitely a surprise package because no one ever imagined Kareena Kapoor to play a negative character back then. As guilt-ridden Neha Verma, Kareena pulls off her character establishing her superiority over her counter parts in the film. After ‘Poo’ in K3G, Fida definitely marked Kareena Kapoor’s prominence as an actor in Bollywood. The film could not do that well at the box-office but critics definitely loved Kareena Kapoor’s performance.
2. Priyanka Chopra as Mrs. Sonia Roy in Aitraaz
When a woman wanted to win her old love back in ways as dirty as possible, audiences were left awestruck! Priyanka Chopra took the larger chunk of success pie after the release of Aitraaz purely because of her intriguing presence in the film. Abbas-Mustan’s Aitraaz was way ahead of its times too. Aitraaz was a film where Priyanka Chopra proved that she is lot more than just a pretty face. She also bagged the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role in 2004 for the same film. Well deserved for sure!
3. Vidya Balan as Krishna in Ishqiya
From a sensitive and over-protective Bengali woman in Parineeta to a melancholic widow from UP in Ishqiya, Vidya Balan definitely keeps proving her versatility as an actor. When Krishna says “Ishq mein sab bewajah hota hai” you definitely felt like forgiving Krishna for all her misdeeds in the film.
4. Urmila Matondkar as Riya Jaiswal in Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya
After wooing the audience with her powerful role in Rangeela, it won’t be wrong to say that Urmila Matondkar is definitely one of the most underrated actresses of Bollywood. From her sizzling dance moves in the song ‘Kambakt Ishq’ with Fardeen Khan, we hardly noticed Sonali Kulkarni because Urmila managed to hog on all the limelight for her performance as an over-obsessed Priya Jaiswal. Urmila’s films like Daud (1997), Satya (1998), Kaun(1999), Mast (2000), Jungle (2000), Bhooth (2003) and Ek Hasina Thi (2004) have proved her mettle as an actor.
5. Konkona Sen as Diana in Ek Thi Daayan
A bad movie is forgotten too soon and the audience doesn’t like remembering it either. However, if we ever speak of Ek Thi Daayan, it would be purely because of Konkona Sen and her role as Diana in the film.Well her dialogue “Ek baar kisi daayan ke saath so lo … toh phir kisi aur ke saath neend hi nahi aati” is the only thing that was scary in the entire so called ‘horror’ film which looked more like a joke!
6. Madhuri Dixit as Anjali in Pukar
A shattered Anjali is heart-broken when her childhood sweetheart decides to marry someone else. Madhuri Dixit managed to play the role of a revengeful and obsessive lover too well and she did all she could to win back Anil Kapoor’s love. However, when her own guilt strikes her and she manages to mend her ways, its too late. Madhuri Dixit’s performance in the film was loved by both audience and critics. She went on to win the Filmfare Award for the best actress that very year!
7. Preity Zinta as Sonia Kapoor in Armaan
When a bubbly and chirpy Preity Zinta announced that it would be a negative role that she would be playing in her next, the audience was definitely puzzled. They always loved Preity in happy roles. However, in no time Preity Zinta royally managed to prove everyone wrong when she played the role of an obsessive lover, Sonia opposite Anil Kapoor. The movie was a disaster but if we ever speak of her best roles amidst films like Kal Ho Na Ho and Veer-Zara, we know we can’t miss this.
8. Richa Chaddha as Bholi Punjaban in Fukrey
Her name did have ‘Bholi’ but Richa Chaddha definitely proves it wrong the moment she opens her mouth in the film. Her policy is simple, you mess with her and she will find absurd ways to beat the shit outta you. Her role was nowhere close to what usual heroines do in the film and she is a fearless gundi who knows her way out in every possible situation.
Don’t believe us? Well this dialogue promo of Fukrey will explain it all and will make you like her, a little more!
